Brown Sugar Designs is a line of handcrafted jewelry made with natural gemstones created to express your unique personality. Meet the talented designer and owner, Naleli Askew.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I’ve been making jewelry since I was a little girl and, a few years ago, I felt the need to get back to my creative roots. I get my inspiration from the beads; I let the colors speak to me. I also get a lot of inspiration from my girlfriends and their different styles and personalities—I like to create designs I know they would love.
When and how did your company come to life?
I have always enjoyed making jewelry, so about a year and half ago I created styles for myself. Friends and family started asking for their own so hence a collection has been created.
What’s your ultimate dream for your company?
Brown Sugar Designs is temporarily feeding my creative juices while I work on completing my GIA degree with the hopes of starting my own fine jewelry collection. I do plan on incorporating the two.

What do you think of the DC Metropolitan Area style?
I think that DC has great style. We are such an international mecca that you really get a sense of style from all over the world. Many would say that DC is still building its fashion credentials, so the world needs to watch out!
Favorite neighborhood/town for shopping:
That’s difficult to say. The city is full of fun shopping in every nook and cranny. I love U Street, Georgetown and Bethesda.
