Welcome to our local business spotlight! This is a fresh new series where we feature DMV-area shops, businesses, and more!
Our first spotlight is with ANTHOM, a web-based retail concept specializing in emerging designers, exclusive pieces, and commissioned collaborations. ANTHOM’s leadership is made up of Carla Cabrera, Ashley Turchin and Marshall Johnson. Let’s chat.
CapFabb: CapFabbers know and love ANTHOM, no question about that. But for a little background, tell us about how you got started.
ANTHOM: The three of us have been close friends for a while, and we always chatted about our love of unique, talented designers and our shared sense of style. One afternoon we kind of just said – “It’s now or never…we’re going to do this” – and a few months of sleepless nights and tired eyes later ANTHOM was born.
CapFabb: ANTHOM is known for under the radar designers and independent labels how and why did you focus on that?
ANTHOM: We all share an undeniable love and appreciation for art, style and craftsmanship. The designers showcased at ANTHOM translate their inspirations into beautifully unique, well made fashions that not only become artistic inspirations, but a means of expressing and living life to us and our customers. ANTHOM celebrates independence and individuality – we strive to only carry very special, well made pieces.
CapFabb: This one is for Ashley, you’ve had a rich personal background, from modeling to law, what’s your advice for figuring it all out?
Ashley: Never take anything too seriously (or personally), keep your chin up, and take it one day at a time :)
CapFabb: And one for Marshall, You’re an economics buff! How did you combine this type of 9-5 job with design, art and all things creative?
Marshall: I think Economics gets a bad rap as just a 9-5 job – it’s an incredibly dynamic field. The basic tenets of Economics guide all our creative entrepreneurial decisions: supply and demand, scarcity, individual incentives. To be a successful creative person, you need to be informed about all these things.
CapFabb: And last but not least, Carla; how has your South American upbringing influenced your fashion sense.
Carla: I was exposed to a very colorful culture so I am not afraid to play with patterns, texture, and color in my wardrobe.
CapFabb: Although ANTHOM is an online shop, what do you love about DC?
ANTHOM: DC is an incredibly educated and informed city with an international base. The diversity of opinion and experience is continually inspiring.
CapFabb: Speaking of DC, you guys have a huge event coming up…TODAY! Tell us the deets!
ANTHOM: ANTHOMlive is our very first event! It will be a unique opportunity for people to celebrate with us and shop all our wares from independent labels, up-and-coming designers + 11 exclusive capsule collections – all in the confines of the sleekest lounge in the city. We hope to see you there! http://www.shopanthom.com/anthomlive/august-2013
